June 4, 2014 : Presentation Day - Overall Review

Today was the final day of our genuis hour project. We had our presentation structured a certain way and we knew what we wanted to say and the order of how we would progress.

Structure of presentation :
We began our presentation today with showing off our proposal and explaining to the class what our project was about. We had explained how our live skit wasnt our original intention. We told the class how we had originally palnned to do a "This Hour Has 22 Minutes" kind of video in which it would mainly focus around Fraser Heights. But due to the fact that we were only going to do 1 genuis hour project instead of the original 2, we had lost time due to us working the the video instead of focusing on the skit. Due to that, we had lost some time and had to scrap the idea and come up with a quicker project which we could do in the condensed time frame. We decided to do a little snippet of what the video would be like in the form of a live skit. After we had explained this, we showed the class the video of the original shamwow so they could get an idea of what our skit was based around and give them some backround knowledge. We had also shown them a blooper video to show where we would draw some insperation from. Now it was time for us to show our presentation.

The Grand Finale - The Live Skit !
We finished off the presentation with the main gig. The Skit. Our skit had gone very well. Our practice and constant rehearsel clearly came through and showed that we were well prepared and knew how we wanted the skit done. We were able to play off of each other very well which shows that our prep really came in handy. There wasnt a single moment where there was awkward silence which was huge because it would ruin the entirety of the mood set. We all played out our charecters very well and surprised a lot of the classmates with our comedic ablities since there were lots of moments of laughter. I guess people didnt expect to see this from us. Even when we had a little slip up ( dividers falling ) we were able to recouver very quickly. Overall, I think the project went very well and I am happy with the group's progress. We worked hard on preparing this for the class and we are very happy with bthe fact they enjoyed it.

May 25, 26, 27, 2014

 May 25
On Sunday, we all met up at the high school and began to rehearse our  skit with props. We first decided what kinds of roles we would play an the types of voices we would use. Next, we all figured out the movements we going to do when we were talking. We decided our placements and then started to practice. It started off slow as we were really unsure of what we would say so we talked about different scenarios and looked at some infomercials online to see how theirs began. After searching some up, we had an idea of how to begin. We then started to practice once more and became more relaxed instead of serious so we just said whatever came to our minds and let the words roll off our tongues. We did this quite a few times with the scenarios and choose which way we liked the best. On this day, we had made significant progress and felt we were close to being ready to present. We called it a day and we all went home and watched the Champions League finals.

New Learning for the Day :  Today we had learned that we didnt know how to really advance the skit and were struggling to play off of each and had many moments of silence. We then looked up some videos and whatched some infomercials to see how they sort of advanced themselves. Here's an example of what we looked at. : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZKUJT7-6iI
What we learned from this is how they advanced the infomericial. We noticed how they often added in questions to move along the commercial and we decided it was a good way to move the skit along. We also learned that we need to use a more unique and exicting voice rather than just our normal voices just like the video.

May 26
After school on Monday, we once again met up and rehearsed our skit. We noiticed an improvement from yesterday because we saw that we were able to figure out how to proceed the skit without as many pauses by having One member ask questions as like an audience member. With this way, we were able to progress futher and have less erros in our skit. We practiced untill we felt satisfied with our progress and calle dit a day.

New learning / Research : today we didnt really learn or research anything, as we had just rehearsed our skit multiple time untill we felt we had made good progress. No videos were looked at this day.

May 27
Much similar to Monday, we had met up for our third and final time to practice rehaesing our skit. This day went rather smoothly as we had plenty of practice from previous meetups. Our attemps went smoothly and it was just a matter of ironing out the kinks and getting the little details of the presenation right. For the most part, we felt like we were ready to present.

New Learning / Research :  Today went similar To last day. Nothing really was resaerched. for the few problems we encoutered, like the final choices for the voice we would use were easily solved by personal preference.

Semiahoo Secondary School ELL Students Peer Review

Jay was in a different group where the other members were not part of ours for the ELL student facetiming. Jeffrey and I were in a group. Jay facetimed Garry and Jeffrey and I facetimed Vincent. Both of them said similar things. They both liked the overall idea and thought it was cool. They liked the fact that it is a live performance because it is unique. They had never seen Shamwow before so it was kind of hard for them to understand our concept. Which helps us because we got the info that we should show the original video first so people can understand what we are making a parody of. We will end up incorparating garry's thought into our final project.

Peer Review #1, Jessica, Andrew and Braden

Today on May 13, we had peer interviews done on our Scam Now skit. The first group we interviewed consisted of Jessica, Braden and Andrew. We told about our skit, and how we were going to present it. We then asked for their opinion on different matters of our skit. They all agreed that they liked the concept that we are doing. They had different suggestions for us as well. Braden recommended that we do a video and a skit, so it is like a real informercial. Jessica says she appreciates the fact we are doing a

Peer Review #3 Sukhman

Finally, we interviewed Sukhman. She thinks our idea is cool, different and new. She says it is better to make a video instead of doing it live because of the power of video editing. Sukhman also says she wants we should rotate our lines instead of having just one person speaking throughout the whole performance. She emphasized that she liked our idea a lot because it is unique.

Peer Review #2 Jonathan's Group

Jonathan recommended that we use the punch lines from the real infomercial that we are making a parody of. For example, the real infomercial says "You're going to love what you see." He says that our ideas were interesting and he likes the concept. Jonathan thought it was better to make a video instead of live one because he is used to imagining informercial on TV and not live. He also added, we could have more freedom with editing. We will take his suggestions into account.

Hurray

Yay!  Your invite came through and I can see your work!

May 7, 2014

Today we thought of the ways we would present our skit. For block 1, we discussed about voice tones, background music, the length of the presentation, whether or not we would have audience participation and we began to work on the script. We spent the bulk of our time more discussing the minor details of the project rather than working on the script because the majority of the project is focussed around how the product is presented rather than actual words being said. We managed to work together well and make some progress. We are excited for the end result of our project.

For block 2, we discussed how we would set up our presentation. We decided we would make parody logos of the real ones that were used in the video. We now know how our product is going to be presented from a design point of view. For example, we have dividers spread out in a equal manner with a poster on each one.We looked at a wide arrange of videos from fails to tips for acting and actual full on infomericials. These helped us to get an understanding of what we weretrying to accomplish

Here are some examples of videos we looked at to show our research componant :

April 30, 2014

(April 30, 2014)

Today we worked on the infomercial and made an outline. we include different elemnts of what our skit would be composed of. Foe example we wrote down diffrent ways in which we could show off our ideas of fraser heights. I think we worked well togther and were productive during class time. We formed some great ideas and made progress towards a final product. We also straightened out the logistics of the video. We set a loose script and we are planning on smoothing that out next class time.  We decided to do a video to practice our public speaking and performing skills. Overall today went very well and we made a lot of progress. I am excited to see the final product. So to sum up today. We had made all of our preperations to push ourselves forward for next class and starting diving into the "meat"of our project.

Proposal

Jay D, Jeffrey P, Eric B, Genious Hour Proposal

*Due to time restraints, our Genious Hour project had to be downsized into a little snippet of what it would be. As a result, our proposal has also changed. The original proposal is on the bottom.

New Proposal
Our purpose remains the same as said below. We are still aiming to use our creativity, passion for comedy and stage performing skills on a finished product. Now we are doing a live skit in class. The skit is a parody of a ridiculous overexaggerated infomercial named Shamwow. Instead of doing lines, we will improvise off a guide rather than a strict script. The materials we will need are bowls, water, paper, towel and dividers. We will also show our learning progress by telling the class about our steps to complete the project, for example we watched videos of other infomercial parodies and bloopers, so we will show them those actual videos. In addition, we will be telling them about our purpose, problems encountered, how we resolved them. how we decided on what exactly our script would consist of (roles, way to present), show them our end result, which is the skit itself.

New learing :
While doing this project we will learn a variety of new skills. Because none of us have never done an acting skit like this, we will mostly learn about the art of preformance the most. We  have alot to learn about since we dont really know anything about preformance. We will learn different components from theatre like our presentaion, improv, and delivery. This project will also help to teach us about time mangement now because we wasted some valuable time brainstorming ideas and such for our initial genius hour project ( see below ). This project being like theatre will also help us to develope our oral communication skills as well as creative thinking, problem solving skills, collaboration , teamwork, applying new skills and the abilty to work under pressure ( the live audience ).

Research component :
The research component of our project is very vital beacause if we went into this project without researching anything, our end result of the project would be very messy. The research componant of this project will consist of searching up official infomercials and analyzing them to get an understanding of what our skit would be like. We will end up looking at many to get a concept together. We will also have to research preformance tips as well since we all have pretty much no knowledge of how to do a well done presentation. We will mainly look up videos since they will help us put the most.

Original Proposal
Both part 1 and 2

AOI and Big Picture Connections

  • Social Education: Social issues/contemporary political issues
  • Learning Development of new skills: acting, creativity, enhanced editing, etc.
  • Presentation Formats: learning what works/what doesn't
Intended Audience
  • Students and staff at Fraser Heights Secondary
  • Performed to them through a parody of FH news issues on video and a comedy sketch live
Plan

Time-Our timeline is to complete it before the end of the semester. Around the end of May-early June is when we want to be 100% done. That is for both part 1 and 2. We are not sure how long we want to take with part 1 (comedy sketch live).

Success to us is a fully completed well edited video. In our intentions this video will be the final finished product of the entire project that shows our effort.

Resource Type                             Source                         Usefulness

Camera                                      One of us                      Required to film video

Mics                                               Jay                            Need to pick up quality sound

Outfits                                          Closets                       Video and comedy sketch need props

Editing software                       Eric's computer              Makes the video interesting and snazzy

Creativity                                    All of us                       Our performances would be boring without it

Progress

Kept on the google docs/blogger. A detailed journal of our progress will be posted there. The journal will also explain problems encountered to what progress was made. Most of the progress will be about our research of other comedies/parodies, advanced video editing and when we get creative and brainstorm.

Peer Review

We will ask some of the audience questions, before and after our finished products. Such as asking a fellow student about an idea for our skit. Or getting feedback about our video.
